There are many different types of processing techniques for cold plates in liquid cooling systems, such as brazing process liquid cooling plates, friction welding process water cooling plates, embedded copper tube process cold plates, etc. In addition to these types, there is another type of water cooling plate that uses stainless tubes as liquid cooling channels.

Advantages of Stainless stell tube as flow channels in the liquid cold plates:

The most characteristic feature is the excellent anti-oxidation and anti-corrosion performance of stainless copper tubes,Although the bending process of steel pipes is more difficult than that of copper pipes, and the bending radius is more limited, stainless steel pipes are irreplaceable when there is a problem of circulating liquid corrosion in special environmental environments, and are a strong testimony to the long service life of cold plates.

What kind of manufacutering process could we used for the stainless tube cold plates?

There are three conventional stainless steel tube cold plate processes, and different process types have different characteristics;
1. Epoxy filled steel tube cold plate type: Aluminum (AL6061 or AL6063 can be used) bottom plate is CNC machined to make grooves, steel tubes are buried in the grooves, and epoxy is filled into the surface of the steel tube to make the surface flat. Because there is a layer of epoxy on the surface, the heat sink cannot directly contact the steel tube. At the same time, the thermal conductivity of epoxy is low, and its heat dissipation effect is slightly inferior to direct contact; but it is the simplest in terms of process.

2.Embedded steel pipe soldering cold plate type: The pipe groove is also processed on the aluminum substrate of the cold plate. Considering the problem of weldability, the aluminum substrate and the steel pipe need to be nickel-plated to increase weldability, and then the steel pipe is welded in the groove of the aluminum substrate, filled with solder paste and processed to a flat surface. Its thermal conductivity is better than that of epoxy resin filling, but the cost will be higher.

3.Steel tube cold plate type using casting process: This type of process requires a customized tooling to position the steel pipe in the tooling, pour molten aluminum into the mold, and form an integrated steel pipe cold plate after cooling, and then complete it through CNC processing. There will be a problem of a small amount of porosity in local areas, and its characteristics are suitable for situations with large demand.
